Winning Productions

The call for applications of the 3rd Music Theatre NOW edition ended June 30th 2015.

450 participants from 54 countries took part.

 

14 first productions of new works, which were realized anywhere in the world since July 2012 were selected by a jury made up of internationally renowned theatre makers from five continents. Operas and music theatre large and small, works made for large opera houses, or works created for tiny venues, which are aesthetically innovative and reflect new developments in this genre from the various corners of the world, have been chosen:

The Jury

The international jury for Music Theatre NOW 2015 consists of Brett Bailey (South African playwright, designer and director, who continues his commitment from the 2012 jury), Guy Coolen (director of the production company ‘Muziektheater Transparant' and artistic director of the international opera festival ‘Operadagen’ in Rotterdam), Sara Joan Fang (music producer for Singapore’s national performing arts centre ‚Esplanade - Theatres on the Bay’), as well as Ana Lara (Mexican composer and founder of the festival ‘Música y Escena’) and Joseph V. Melillo (executive producer of the ‘Brooklyn Academy of Music’).

 

Brett Bailey

Brett Bailey is a South African playwright, designer, director, installation maker and the artistic director of the performance company THIRD WORLD BUNFIGHT
His iconoclastic works, which interrogate the dynamics of the post-colonial world, include the musical dramas BIG DADA, IPI ZOMBI?, iMUMBO JUMBO and ORFEUS, a radical reworking of Verdi’s MACBETH, and the performance installation, EXHIBIT B. 
He has worked throughout South Africa, in several African and European countries, and in the UK. His works have played across Europe, Australia, Africa and Latin America, and have won several awards, including a gold medal for design at the Prague Quadrennial (2007). 
He headed the jury of the Prague Quadrennial in 2011, was a juror of the International Theatre Institute’s ‘Music Theatre Now’ competition (2012/3), and is a member of the artistic committee of South Africa’s National Arts Festival.
He directed the opening show at the World Summit on Arts and Culture in Johannesburg (2009), and from 2006-2011 the opening shows at the Harare International Festival of the Arts. 
From 2008-2011 he was curator of South Africa’s only public arts festival, ‘Infecting the City’, in Cape Town. In 2014 he delivered the International Theatre Institute’s World Theatre Day message for UNESCO.

 

Guy Coolen

Guy Coolen is general and artistic director of the production company Muziektheater Transparant (Antwerp) and  artistic director of the annual operafestival The Opera Days in Rotterdam.  In march 2008 he was engaged as the artistic director of the Frysk Festival (Friesland). After his studies in Dutch and English Literature, he graduated in Theatrical Sciences and Communication. Since 1994 he leads Muziektheater Transparant, a company that realizes musical theatre throughout the world. Transparant has five composers and a few directors in residence. Together with David Moss, Guy Coolen founded the Institute for Living Voice, an international centre for singing, specializing in workshops and concerts in all vocal genres. Guy Coolen is member of numerous organisations, between others the European Cultural Parliament. With Muziektheater Transparant he was invited for a residence in Stavanger Cultural Capital of Europe 2008, and was guest at the Holland Festival, Festival d’Avignon, Kunstenfestivaldesarts, Edinburgh International Festival, Singapore International Festival and Melbourne Festival.

 

Sara Joan Fang

A music producer for Esplanade - Theatres on the Bay, Singapore's national performing arts centre, Sara Fang has organized (for the last 8 years) the annual 10-day Mosaic Music Festival which celebrates a diversity of music from pop to jazz, electronic to hip-hop. She also works on orchestra presentations and contemporary music performances. 
A trained pianist, Sara graduated with a M.A. in Arts Administration from Columbia University. In New York, she has worked at Jazz at Lincoln Center, Lower Manhattan Cultural Council and Parnassus Productions, Inc, a music production and publishing office created by composer Tan Dun. 

Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay is Singapore’s national performing arts centre, offering more than 3,000 performances each year for all to enjoy. The centre presents 15 festivals and 19 programme series featuring dance, music, theatre, visual arts and more annually.

 

 

Ana Lara

Mexican composer of stage, orchestra, chamber and mixed works that have been successfully performed throughout the Americas, Asia and in Europe; she is also active as a promoter of new music.
Ms. Lara attended the Conservatorio Nacional de Música, where her teachers included Daniel Catán and Mario Lavista. Her post-graduate work was with Wlodzimierz Kotonski and Zbigniew Rudzinski at the Warsaw Academy of Music, on a Mexican-Polish study grant. She graduated from Maryland University on Ethnomusicology in 2003.
She has received several grants from the Mexican Ministry of Culture (Sistema Nacional de Creadores), the USA/Canada/Mexico Creative Artists’ Residency Program Grant (1997), and the Bellagio Artistic Residency (2000). She also served as composer-in-residence of the National Symphony Orchestra of Mexico in 1993-94.
In 1998, she founded the Festival Internacional Música y Escena and served as its director until 2009. This festival obtained the annual Award of the Mexican Union of Critics of Theater and Music (2001). She has been artistic director of Instrumenta Verano Puebla 2003, Forum Monterrey 2007 and from 2007 until 2009 she coordinated the Contemporary Music Program at the Festival Internacional Cervantino. 
Ana Lara produces a program at University Radio (Radio UNAM) devoted to contemporary music since 1990 (Hacia una nueva música).

 

Joseph V. Melillo

Joseph V. Melillo, executive producer since 1999, is responsible for BAM's artistic direction, overseeing programming in all its performance spaces: the Howard Gilman Opera House, Harvey Theater, BAM Fisher, Rose Cinemas, and BAMcafé Live. He previously served as BAM's producing director and founding director of the Next Wave Festival, which debuted in 1983. Currently in his 31st  year at BAM, Melillo has fostered the work of emerging and established artists, and forged numerous international partnerships such as DanceMotion USA, a program of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the US Department of State produced by BAM to showcase American dance abroad. Awards include the Chevalier and Officier de L'ordre des Arts et des Lettres (France) and an OBE (Great Britain). He is also on the U.S. Nominating Committee for the Praemium Imperiale, a global arts prize awarded annually by the Japan Art Association. Melillo has served on the faculty of Brooklyn College, and as a lecturer at colleges, universities, and arts agencies in the US and abroad.
